The Honda started tapping fairly loudly as I was finishing up a ride the other day. Sounded more like a top end rather than a bottom end issue. Went to adjust the valves this morning, and there were steel shavings mixed in with the oil in the valve cover. Not good. Adjusted the left side, went to do the right side and the engine seized. The pistons will move, but when the crank gets to a certain spot it hits a brick wall. I’m gonna head to the local moto j unk yard on Tuesday to look for a new engine. It has bot been a good week.
In better news, I’m babysitting this pretty girl for the week. She was best buds with Brutus. We almost lost her a few years ago, but she miraculously overcame some pretty aggressive cancer. She’s the last of the Brindle Brigade.
Oppo, we must repent. We have angered the moto gods, both old and new.

How many miles and years on the engine?

According to the odo 10k, but it’s 47 years old. The speedo gear is also wonky, so who knows if the odo is correct. When I first got the bike I discovered the previous owner had cracked the oil filter mechanism (most likely when they went down on the bike). Replaced the right engine cover with a junkyard unit. The bike was running tip top, but the valves were getting a bit chattery right before the ticking. I’m thinking something got wonky with the oil delivery.

You’re down in the southwest right? That heat can be brutal on an old air cooled Honda. I don’t drive my 71 CB500 to work because it’s too much sitting in traffic in the heat.
Those old twins aren’t super simple to find but good luck.

Yep. She’s been pretty solid. I DD’d her for a year when I first got her. Also rode a ‘79 CM185 for my first year or so in college.
We have a huge motorcycle junkyard here that I know has three 450 engines sitting in a trailer. Gonna check em out this week and see what they want for one.
